YOLO Right?

YOLO. A common term that many have heard of. Sure, the idea of being aware of your surroundings at all times and savoring each moment isn’t that bad. It can be quite a good thing when applied right, the concept that is. It’s obvious that we only live once on this earth, and taking time in our day to slow down and enjoy life isn’t wrong and can be quite beneficial to one’s mental health. That is what Shelley Viskovich certainly believes in this article listed above.

While it is good to slow down in life, the commonly heard term YOLO, You Only Live Once, can have a bit of a shakey foundation in regards to Biblical truth however. Most of the time now, when someone says YOLO, it is usually after they have done something risky and dangerous or plain stupid for the sake of pleasure and entertainment. Instant gratification without thinking of the consequences later on, because you only live once. In this regard, the idea of YOLO becomes dangerous in its ability to excuse sinful behavior. When people use this term, they usually don’t think about the fact of eternity.

Eternity. That word can scare some people today. I know I certainly have been scared by the term. In scripture it is stated clearly that we cannot take any earthly possessions to heaven (or hell for that matter.) Yet, many people, even Christians, have this YOLO mindset where they try to have the most fun they can have and store up all the worldly possessions they can because its the best they can do to satisfy themselves in the moment. If people live in a constant state of instant gratification and using a term to excuse sin, it will harm them in the long run because that ultimately doesn’t satisfy like sin wants them to believe.

The only real thing that satisfies is good things from the Lord and giving back to the Lord, via storing up wealth in heaven through living for God. If people only focus on the now of life and the best things to do now for fun, it will all be for not in the long run. If you haven't already, think about eternity every once in a while, and let that impact your decisions and mindset going forward. I’m not saying don’t enjoy the life God’s given you, but don’t fall into the trap of only thinking of the now and yourself in the now. Here is another helpful article on this matter.
